Ephedra Weight Loss Pills
There are so many different statements and claims made on the internet about the legality of ephedra weight loss pills in the United States, that a lot of confusion has been created and people wonder whether or not it is possible to buy any product that contains ephedra and whether or not it is safe.
The main contributor to the confusion regarding ephedra weight loss pills has been generated by scams. Many unethical pill vendors are making an assortment of different kinds of claims or statements about how their products somehow fall into some kind of exception to the ban so that they claim to be able to sell their products. The fact is that they are selling a product that is not allowed to be manufactured, sold, or purchased within the United States.
In 2004, the Food and Drug Administration declared ephedra to be a dangerous herb and announced that its danger to the public was adequate enough to merit a ban on the substance and any product that contains it so that it could not be produced, bought our sold.
The next year, this ruling by the FDA was challenged by the Nutraceutical Corporation, saying that the ban was illegal. At that time, a Utah judge ruled in favor of the Nutraceutical corporation. However, this did not lift the ban entirely. It involved products that included 10mg or less of ephedra alkaloids – which had not yet been proven by the FDA to be dangerous. That said, most ephedra weight loss pills contain between 20 and 25mg of the alkaloids.
In August, 2006, it was officially declared illegal to produce or sell products that contain ephedra, as the FDA’s position regarding the dangers of the substance was upheld by the 10th US Court of Appeals. Ever since, it has been illegal to sell ephedra weight loss pills that contain any quantity of that ingredient.
This law continues to be challenged today, but as it stands, any company that is selling ephedra weight loss pills within the United States, or that is selling them to someone in the United States is taking part is selling illegally.
Many alternatives are now being sold, many of which are being sold under the claim that they are as effective as ephedra weight loss pills. That said, even with products that are ephedra-free, it is important to consult your doctor before beginning their use.
